An arrest warrant was issued against actress Mehjabeen Chowdhury and her brother Alisan Chowdhury in a case filed on charges of embezzlement and death threats. The case was filed by a person named Amirul Islam. He alleged that Mehjabeen Chowdhury offered to become his business partner and Amirul gave him a total of 2.7 million taka at various times. But when he did not take the initiative to start business activities for a long time, he asked for the money back, abused Mehjabeen and her brother Amirul, threatened them and forbade them to ask for money again, and threatened to kill them.
However, Mehjabeen claims that the allegations against her are baseless and motivated. The actress surrendered in court on Sunday (November 16) evening in this incident and took bail. She made an official statement on Facebook today, Monday. Mehjabeen wrote, ‘An unknown person filed a case against me and my 19-year-old younger brother in March 2025. I have not received any information about this case in the last 9 months. Because, the complainant could not give the police my correct phone number, correct address or any verified information…. The complainant claims that he used to message me on Facebook since 2016. He could not show that either. Nothing came in Messenger, WhatsApp or my number. He could not show even a screenshot…. He gave me 2.7 lakh taka, how did he give it; bank transaction, no check, bKash transaction, no written agreement, no receipt, no witness, nothing. He could not show even a single document.’
Regarding the identity of the complainant, Mehjabeen wrote, ‘His identity is incomplete. His complete identity card has not been submitted yet. Even his NID is missing. Since the news was published, the complainant has switched off his phone, even his lawyer’s number is switched off.’
Regarding the complainant’s claim of calling him to a restaurant near Hatirjheel and threatening him, Mehjabeen wrote, ‘In the last nine months, he could not show even a second of CCTV footage of the restaurant or the surrounding road, no witness, no evidence, nothing. However, Hatirjheel is the most CCTV-controlled area in Dhaka.
Arrest warrants were issued against the actress and her brother for not appearing in court despite receiving legal notices. But Mehjabeen wrote, ‘I have not received any notice in the last nine months. I have not received any phone call from any police station, any court notice or document. If I had received any notice, I would have taken legal action earlier….Although there is no basis for this case, when I came to know that an arrest warrant has been issued, I followed the legal process and took bail—because, I respect the law and rules.’
Finally, Mehjabeen wrote, ‘A case filed without evidence never becomes true. These days, it has become easy to insult someone, defame someone or use someone else to go viral. Whatever the motive of this person, whatever he wants to do by trying to tarnish my or my family’s reputation—I believe everything will be cleared up soon. “Until something is proven, I would request everyone, please be compassionate, please be humane, and don’t start any media trials without knowing anyone.”
